Lynley won the bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the Coxless Pairs event and spoke about the journey to getting to the podium.

On Wednesday the Year 10 IOS (Institute of Sport) class had the pleasure of hosting Lynley Coventry who won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She encouraged everyone to take advantage of the opportunities that come their way and to always be prepared to give things a go.

Lynley was a NZ Women’s Basketball representative when she was asked to ‘come and give rowing a go.’ She credits her mental strength and awareness from playing basketball at the highest level in allowing her to transfer to rowing as easily as she did.

She spoke about the trials of being a female athlete in those times and celebrated the 50:50 ratio that we had at this year’s Olympics in Paris and was rapt to see the wahine toa in the IOS class.

A great presentation that proves it doesn’t matter where you live, how you begin, or the journey you need to take…. If you want to achieve highly in your sport… YOU CAN!
